Speaker Cabling

Updated 16-May-2002 01:16:44 PM

Connectors (e.g., banana plugs) attach on one of several ways:

  • Screw threads and you twist it onto the bare wire.
  • One, or even two, set screws. You loosen them with a small screwdriver, insert the wire, and tighten.
  • A hollow base piece and then a screw-on end piece that crimps the wire.
  • A piece that crimps over the wire with a special crimping tool that you can buy from a hardware store for $10 or $15.
  • Solder-on connectors. More difficult to attach if you’re not used to soldering (heating a connection to you can melt metal onto it), but probably the most reliable connection.

Here's even more about banana plugs, including brands and prices.

If you need help soldering, here are some tips.

Be sure to get the polarity of the speakers correct through the system. The AVIA Guide to Home Theatre has several test that can check the phasing for you.

Do speaker wires have to be of equal length? Here's a post on the Home Theater Forum that argues that they do not.
