some comments on a link provided here, or if a link is broken, please send email

Forums are places where you can read messages in various subject areas, respond
if you like, and post your own messages. The interaction is more like email than
live chat, but unlike email all the messages are created and read on the web
site, not with your email program. The forums listed are tightly managed, so
you’ll rarely find inappropriate posts.
Forums are a great place to get your HT questions answered. For best results,
ask for facts (“Does the Wizbang XYZ-123 receiver support Dolby Pro Logic II?”)
rather than opinions (“Which is better, the Wizbang XYZ-123 or the SuperSonic
ABC-987?”). But, no matter what you ask, you’ll almost always get responses. Be
cautious about taking anything you read on a forum as gospel, as there are no
minimum qualifications for posting. You might be taking advice from a bored
14-year-old!
Audio Asylum
They call it "a free, independent resource made
available to you by a small volunteer group of audio lunatics." There's a small
video asylum there, too. Very much out of the mainstream compared to, say,
Home Theater Forum, but isn't that what the
Internet is for? (For example, today I saw a post titled "vinyl tubeheads, do
you listen to CDs?" On the Audio Asylum, this is not an strange question.)
Head Fidelity Forum
A pretty active headphone forum. Some of the
posts are actually very detailed recviews.
Home Theater Forum
Tremendously active, and the place where the
author (Marc Rochkind) hangs out. There's a Home Theater Basics section
specifically for beginners, although all the sections are friendly to newcomers.
Covers audio and video hardware about equally, as well as software.
There's one particular thread of interest to
beginners called
A Primer for Home Theater Newcomers that's been reserved for little
essays on a variety of subjects. Some are fairly advanced—not really for
beginners—but worth reading nonetheless.
Home Theater
Talk
Much less frequented than the others listed here,
but for some this might actually be an advantage, as posts stay on top much
longer, so they're seen over a longer period. Some of the forum sections, such
as Frequent Questions, are promising, but are too thinly populated to be useful.
AV Science Ultimate Forum
As active as Home Theater Forum, but more serious
and advanced, and more tilted toward video. It's the place for really tough
video problems.
