About Home Theater
This is the Home Theater section of the huge
About site. It's updated often with news,
articles, and product information. Very commercial, with many links that appear
to be for information turning out to be links to a vendor's site. But, there are
lots of useful, not especially commercial, articles here as well.
AudioRevolution.com
Updated often with news, articles, and equipment
reviews; especially strong on the latter. Covers software (e.g., DVD reviews) as
well as hardware.
CyberTheater: The Internet Journal of Home Theater
To quote the site: "CyberTheater is not dead, but
updates will be limited as we are devoting most of our efforts to writing for Widescreen Review." Still, there are some really valuable articles here.
Gary Raskin's Home Theatre
Monthly web magazine with usually one or two
reviews or articles each month. Well-written and technically authoritative.
GoodSound!
"Your guide to affordable high-performance
audio," according to the site. (Doesn't cover video.) Updated often, about once
a month it seems, with a new how-to article each month; the ones I looked at
were excellent. Many other articles as well.
HDTV Magazine
There's some useful stuff here, but the site is
mostly about getting you to subscribe to the print magazine. Many free articles
online, but you have to type in your email address for each one, and then they
email you the article. So, not a site that's much fun to browse.
Home Theater
The online version of the well-known print
magazine. Some articles from the print magazine are online, as well as many
articles written just for the online magazine. Perhaps the best part of the site
is
Home Theater 101 (also known as HT Boot Camp). There's also a big archive of
FAQs, which appear to be answers to readers' questions—not
organized in any way, but enjoyable and useful to read through.
International
Audio-Video Review
Extremely detailed, advanced, and loooooong
articles, some of which are rather controversial, judging by what's said about
them on the forums, such as
Audio Asylum. I find it hard to believe some of what's written here,
although the way in which it's written is intimidating. I find the writing
annoyingly verbose, redundant, repetitive, wordy, annoying, and the writer often
seems to just be packing the words into sentences to make them as long as
possible while the reader has long since gotten the point, mainly because the
writing is so redundant and repetitive, and because the writer just seems to be
making the sentences as long as possible, which I find annoying, because it's
just too wordy and annoying. OK, but the site is still worthwhile, or I wouldn't
have included it.
Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity
A frequently updated, well-organized, and
well-written site with articles and reviews, of hardware and software. There's a
master
introductory page with links to basic HT articles.
Sound & Vision
The online version of the print magazine. You
have to click a few levels deep to get the complete listing of articles and
reviews—it appears at first glance that only a few
recent articles are there, but not so.
Stereophile Guide to Home Theater
The web site for the print magazine, but it seems
that fewer articles are online than for the other print magazines. Archives of
back issues only list the article titles. Too bad, because the print magazine is
really good.
TNT-Audio
An unusual web magazine, in both English and
Italian. No advertising, and no other form of income, either. (I thought I had
found one on the page about the official TNT shirt, but it turns out that's not
for sale either!). One of the best sections is the one on
Tips, Tweaks, and DIY
Projects. Too bad the site only covers audio, although a lot of the
information is relevant to HT as well.
Widescreen
Review
Another print magazine's online site. Some of the
material (e.g., DVD reviews) is available to non-subscribers, but most (e.g.,
equipment reviews) is for subscribers only. When you subscribe you get
access to the web site.
